We moved to Bentonville when my daughter was only 5 years old! I never thought we will be celebrating this very important milestone in America. But I Imagined she’s gonna have a party that she’ll remember for the rest of her life. It may not be her dream, but it is mine. I envisioned it, worked hard for it.
Turning eighteen is a milestone that holds deep cultural significance in Filipino tradition. Much like a Quinceañera or Sweet 16, an 18th birthday—known as a debut—is celebrated with a grand party. It often includes a carefully chosen entourage of 18 individuals or multiple sets of 18, symbolizing the transition into adulthood.
Traditionally, the debutante may have 18 roses and 18 candles. The 18 roses represent the important men in her life—uncles, cousins, close friends, a boyfriend, or even suitors—each taking part in a meaningful dance. The 18 candles, on the other hand, are usually given by the significant women in her life, each sharing a short message or wish. The number 18 is intentional, symbolizing maturity and coming of age, which is why most elements of the celebration revolve around it.
Since we already celebrated her Sweet 16 two years ago—with 16 roses and 16 candles—I didn’t want to repeat the same format for her 18th. Instead, we created something more personal and unique.
We introduced 18 Dances, inspired by the traditional 18 roses—but with our own twist. This included all the important people in her life here in America: her friends (both kids and teens), her brother, her boyfriend, and her dad. Each dance was special and filled with meaning.
We also embraced the tradition of 18 Gifts, a beautiful Filipino custom symbolizing abundance and well wishes as she steps into adulthood. Each gift was thoughtfully chosen—a mix of practical items, sentimental keepsakes, and fun surprises. Together, they reflected her personality and the love of those celebrating her.
Lastly, we added 18 Balloons, each representing negative traits or undesirable attitudes that she is ready to let go of as she enters this new chapter of life. With each balloon released or popped, it symbolized growth, renewal, and embracing a brighter future.
It was our way of honoring tradition while making it uniquely hers—a celebration not just of age, but of the person she is becoming.
